Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, often referred to as BJJ or Gracie Jiu Jitsu, is a martial art developed in the early 20th century by the Gracie family in Brazil.
From a history that can be traced back to the introduction of Judo to Brazil, Hélio Gracie adapted the techniques he saw to work for his smaller and more frail frame, making it an ideal option for people of all sizes and strengths.
BJJ can be used as a grappling sport and an effective self defence system. When combined with other arts it can also be used to great effect in Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) competitions, such as the UFC.
As with other martial arts, progress is shown using a belt system; the progression to black belt is as follows: White -> Blue -> Purple -> Brown -> Black.
Due to the time it can take to advance through these grades, stripes are used to demonstrate intermediate progression.
